Kate Moss, Mark Wahlberg & the price of becoming an icon
When we look back at 90s fashion, we usually think of supermodels, iconic campaigns and that effortless “cool girl” aesthetic. But behind some of the most famous images are stories that are much less glamorous.
One of them is the story of Kate Moss and Mark Wahlberg’s famous Calvin Klein campaign from 1992.
Kate Moss was only 17 years old when she took part in the campaign. The photos became iconic and helped turn her into one of the biggest models of the decade. But years later, Kate spoke about how uncomfortable and vulnerable she felt during the shoot. She has said that the experience affected her mentally and that she struggled with anxiety around that time.
And honestly, this makes you look at the photos completely differently.
THE IMAGE VS. THE REALITY
The campaign was considered controversial even at the time. Kate looked extremely young and vulnerable next to Mark Wahlberg, and the whole aesthetic became part of the controversial “heroin chic” era of fashion.
But when an image becomes iconic, we often forget to ask:
How did the person in the picture actually feel?
The fashion industry is built around creating an image. Models are photographed, styled, edited and presented as this perfect version of beauty. But sometimes the person behind that image gets completely forgotten.
Kate’s story is a good example of how something can be considered a huge career success while still being a difficult personal experience.
WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTED TO JUST DEAL WITH IT
One of the biggest problems in the fashion industry has always been the pressure to be professional no matter what.
Imagine being 17, entering an industry where everyone around you is older and more experienced, and being expected to know exactly what you’re comfortable with.
It can be really difficult to say “no” when you feel like saying no could mean losing an opportunity.
And that’s where things can become damaging to someone’s mental health.
Constant pressure to look a certain way, criticism about your body, uncomfortable situations and feeling like you have to please everyone can seriously affect how someone sees themselves.
WHY THIS STILL MATTERS
You might think this is just an old fashion controversy from the 90s, but it really isn’t.
The industry has changed a lot since then. There is much more conversation today about consent, boundaries and mental health, especially for young models.
But fashion is still an industry where appearance matters a lot. Models are constantly being judged based on how they look, how they photograph and whether they fit a certain image.
And when you’re young, that pressure can be even harder to deal with.
What I find most interesting about Kate Moss’s story is that the public saw an iconic campaign, while she was experiencing something completely different behind the scenes.
That’s something we should remember whenever we see a “perfect” fashion image.
We see the final photo.
We don’t see what happened before it.
THE PERSON BEHIND THE PICTURE
Kate Moss became one of the biggest fashion icons ever, but her experience shows that becoming an icon doesn’t mean everything that happens along the way is perfect.
Fashion can be creative, exciting and empowering, but it can also have a darker side when the industry starts caring more about the image than the person creating it.
At the end of the day, a model isn’t just a face in a campaign.
They’re a person.
And no photograph, campaign or career opportunity should be more important than that person’s comfort and mental health.
